When I talk to someone at a table, I usually do one of two things: I either make a point to not stay very long, or I buy something at the end of it. I strongly encourage this type of behavior. We're happy to talk, and we LOVE interaction with potential fans. Just remember that we are, in fact, also working.
For the unaware, a "table barnacle" is someone who comes to your table, talks with you for AGES while blocking you from helping other customers, then leaves without buying anything. To be fair, the tabler is generally talking, too, but in part because we're too socially awkward to say, "Hey, I'm trying to make gas money, could you please go away so I can help paying customers?"
