I have three solutions that I switch among, depending on the situation: I look around like they're not there, I try to engage them in conversation, or I draw something quietly until they need something. I get mixed success with all three, but at least I don't feel like a creeper.
When someone reads one of my comics at my table, I have no idea where to look. I'm stuck standing right there, trying not to stare uncomfortably or search their faces for any sign that they are enjoying my art-baby.
