NOTHING is happening right when a con opens. I've been to cons first thing before, and it can be kind of depressing. Best thing to do is go with some friends, so at least you're not wandering a nearly-empty convention center alone.
As an alternative, try to find a panel that you wouldn't normally attend! It could be a trainwreck, since it's not the primo time slot for running a panel and often goes to the newer presenters, but sometimes you may get lucky. The first times I ran my Whodrawnit?! panel, I had these time slots, and it was a great experience.
