Super MAGFest is one of my favorite cons, but one of its biggest drawbacks is the hotel lottery. For those unfamiliar, Super MAGFest has upwards of 24,000 attendees and takes place at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, which only has about 2,000 guest rooms. Since these rooms (and all the rooms within walking distance of the center) are at a premium, Super MAGFest has a lottery system to give attendees a fighting chance at getting a decent place to stay.
It's theoretically a good system, but with the convention taking place in Washington, DC in January, my cosplayer friends consider getting one of those precious Gaylord National rooms an absolute necessity, as they won't have to go outside and freeze solid. I don't mind the cold and don't cosplay half-naked most of the time, so when we can't get rooms for everyone, I usually take one for the team and end up farther away. It's all good, though, because it's better than carrying that space heater.
